One could not write about the history of the 7th Cavalry Regiment without providing background information on one of the most influential figures which shaped the Spirit of the 7th Cavalry Regiment, General George Armstrong Custer On 15 June, Mexican snipers fired across the Rio Grande and killed a Trooper of the 82nd Field Artillery who was standing picket duty. On 28 July 1866. one of the new authorized cavalry units was constituted in the Regular Army as the 7th Cavalry Regiment. In Thayer II the enemy suffered a punishing loss of 1,757 killed. The current capability of the 7th Cavalry Regiment has been developed in conjunction with the long history of the 1st Cavalry Division.
